John Coltrane 'Resolution (Part II)' Sheet Music Notes ...
A Love Supreme is rightly considered the ultimate achievement of John Coltrane's late work. It has been performed whole or in part by countless players, though usually just its first movement. Drummer John Hanrahan and guitarist Henry Kaiser have long histories with this music. Kaiser's dates to 1965 when he heard A Love Supreme as a 16-year-old college freshman. To celebrate the month leading up to John Coltrane’s 88th birthday, I decided to begin with his masterful solo on “Bye-Ya,” from Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane Live at Carnegie Hall. The improvised solo is roughly from 1:06 to 3:48, for four choruses, or roughly 32 x 4 = 128 bars. Suzanne’s most recent CD, 'Resolution: A Remembrance of John Coltrane' (1999, Vineland) features unique vocal interpretations of the music of John Coltrane—including 2 movements of 'A Love Supreme'—and is mentioned in Ashley Kahn’s 2002 book A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album (Viking).
